England

England will be led by Jos Buttler. The defending champions have a formidable list of top-order batters to choose from. Most teams would love to have the likes of Bairstow or Brooks. The recent form of Jason Roy and David Malan is great news for the England selectors. On the back of his showing in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Alex Hales could compete for a batting slot in the 15-man squad. England bat deep thanks to the presence of experienced allrounders. They include Moeen Ali, Livingstone, Curran, Willey and Woakes.

The pace bowling selections are certain to include Wood, Stone and Topley. Chris Jordan presents another seam bowling option. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are likely to be the preferred spin bowling options. England also look further afield towards Rehan Ahmed or Liam Dawson.

New Zealand

The Kiwis bat deep, with Ferguson coming in at not earlier than number nine. However, on the evidence of their tour of India earlier this year, their bowlers could prove less effective on Indian wickets.

Fakhar Zaman

Pakistan’s opening batter Zaman has garnered 3148 runs at 48.43 from 70 ODI matches. His runs include 10 centuries with a top score of 210 not out that he made against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in July 2018. Zaman needs no introduction to Indian cricket fans who will never forget the opener’s 114 at the Oval in the Champions Trophy final in June 2017.

In 2023, Zaman has made 420 runs in 8 matches at an average of 60.00. Those runs include centuries in three successive innings versus New Zealand, with a highest of 180 not out at Rawalpindi in April.

Cameron Green

Cameron Green has become one of the most devastating white ball batsmen of the world. This was reflected in Green’s exploits for MI in IPL 2023. In 15 ODI matches, Australia’s allrounder Green has scored 302 runs at 50.33 with a top score of 89 not out. Green has yet to score a ton.

That lack can be attributed to the fact that he comes to bat not earlier than number seven n a team with a great top order. Green’s highest score of 89 not out came against New Zealand at Cairns in September 2022. Chasing a target of 233 on a tricky wicket, Australia were reduced to 44 for 5 when Green joined Alex Carey at the wicket.

The pair added 158 for the 6^th wicket before Carey departed. Green guided Australia past the line with two wickets to spare. His runs came off just 92 balls with 10 fours and a six. His seam bowling will prove an additional asset, especially if Australia decide to go with two or more spinners on Indian wickets.

Devon Conway

Like India’s Gill and Australia’s Green, New Zealand opener Conway was one of the success stories of IPL 2023. With 672 runs from 16 games, he made a huge contribution to CSK’s fifth IPL trophy win. In a relatively short period, Conway has established himself as NZ’s best batter across formats. In 18 ODI matches, Conway has made 733 runs at 45.81.

Those runs include three centuries, with a top score of 138. In 2023, Conway scored 308 runs in 6 matches at 50.1. He achieved his highest score versus India in his last innings at Indore in January. Though that knock came in a lost cause, the sheer dominance over the Indian bowlers was evident. The innings that lasted just 100 balls included 12 fours and 8 sixes.

Jason Roy

Roy was one of England’s heroes in their successful ODI World Cup campaign in 2019. Ahead of the WC, he had scored 402 runs from 5 innings in 2019. He carried that form into the Cup matches, scoring 54 in his first match versus South Africa. He followed that up with 153 versus Bangladesh in his 3rd game.

His two most important innings of 66 and 60 came against India and New Zealand, respectively. Since that time, Roy has not enjoyed consistent form. However, the England opener appears to have changed the narrative recently. He made a brilliant 132 versus Bangladesh in a spin-friendly wicket at Mirpur in March. Earlier, Roy smashed the South Africa bowlers for 113 at Bloemfontein in January.
